VENICE SPRING FLINGFree Music and Arts Festival: Venice Spring Fling
On Saturday, May 12, 2012, the second annual VENICE SPRING FLING will kick off beach season in Venice with a free, full day of live music, art displays, and dance in Windward Plaza Park from 11am - 7:30pm. (Windward Plaza Park is at 1 Windward Avenue, between the boardwalk and the bike trail in Venice, CA, 90291.) An offshoot of the highly successful and locally loved Venice Beach Music Fest, the VENICE SPRING FLING keeps the historical creative spirit of Venice vibrant!
This year the Spring Fling is proud to welcome back festival veteran Tracii Guns, who returns after last year's successful headlining spot to redefine classic rock with his new band, TRACII GUNS' LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN. The League features an amazing collaboration of musicians that includes vocalist Scott Foster Harris and multi-instrumentalist Steve Preach (Zen Rizing), drummer Doni Gray (Burning Tree, L.A. Guns), and bassist Johnny Martin (The Road).
It is also an honor for the festival to host BARRY "THE FISH" MELTON (Country Joe and The Fish), performing in an all-star band with Michael Hinton (Mickey Hart, Joan Baez, Jerry Garcia, Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band, and Roky Erickson), Tony Saunders (Merl Saunders and the Rainforest Band), and drummer Andy Kravitz (Taj Mahal, David Bromberg). Melton, a veteran performer who played at Woodstock, is a longtime fan of Venice. "I remember going there as a kid to see the King of the Beat Generation, 'Big Daddy' Nord," says Melton. "Venice was the center of the counterculture in the late '50s and early '60s, and it has maintained a continuing counterculture tradition over all the years of my lifetime. I am delighted to be playing the Spring Fling!"
In addition to Guns and Melton, festival producers have gathered some of the best local Venice and Southern California area musicians to round out the day's talent lineup, including STREET SMART (featuring the best of the boardwalk musicians), local favorites FLY N LION, CANDYGRAM FOR MONGO, world beat funksters DELTA NOVE (celebrating their new release, Imaginary Conversations), BRAW (featuring Norwood Fisher of Fishbone), and LOONER (featuring percussionist Angel Roche, Jr., fresh off the Ziggy Marley tour). Local guitarists MICHAEL JOST (Sugarbitch), MARC BLACKBIRD (Champa 51), STEPHANIE LALLOUZ (Hunny Bunch), and CORTY BYRON will provide additional acoustic performances.
"Venice has always been a stopping point for great musicians and artists," says festival producer Milton Rosenberg. "This year's Venice Spring Fling showcases the best of music, art, and dance." The accompanying art show features paintings, sculpture, and photography from local and international artists Ra Ra SuperStar, Kelly, Joel Harris, Martha C. Wilson, art by sky, Paris Davis, Kai Martin, Eric Evenson, Jim Chelius, Alex Avila, Nuo Liu, Jonny Elder, Billy Pacak, Reena Antonishak, Mary Cheung, and Jean-Paul. Additionally, the art show features a contingent from San Diego's Infusion Project, a self-described "incredible spectrum of events committed to the development of the creative mind inside of everyone." ATS BELLYDANCE AND DRUMS and YA HARISSA BELLYDANCE THEATER also return this year to intersperse dance sets between musical performances on stage.
Third Eye Tie Dye and Eclectic Hoops will be on display and for sale. Music and art by festival participants can be previewed online by visiting www.VeniceSpringFling.com.
