THE UNTOUCHABLES – Los Angeles: 1980. A few young mods dressed in vintage mohair suits sit around in cafes, talking about how great it would be if the entire city were full of rude boys and rude girls. The clubs would be filled with sweaty dancers and their parking lots with shiny scooters. The members of the Untouchables didn't realize that by 1981 they'd be in the middle of their dream come true: a mod revival in the city, of which they were the center and influencing the ska revival nationwide. Kids all over the city danced for hours to singles like "Twist-n-Shake" b/w "Dance Beat," released on their own Dancebeat label in 1982, and 1983's "Tropical Bird" b/w "The General." The band's first 12" was a six-song EP ('84), Live & Let Dance, that included originals like "Free Yourself," "Lebanon," and a cover of the Monkees' "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone." In '84 the band started to get recognition, appearing in movies like Repo Man and Surf II. Their first full-length LP, Wild Child, came in 1985, and the band had several hits in the UK. The Untouchables were the house band at the Roxy, and were the mod/ska band to see every weekend at places like The Timbers, Oscar's Cornhusker, Mama Brown's Backdoor, Fenders and The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach. They have shared stages with The B-52's, Black Uhuru, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and X, and were the impetus for bands such as Fishbone, early No Doubt, Skeletones and Let's Go Bowling. The liner notes for their Cool Beginnings: Rare & Unreleased 1981-1983 album notes of their years at the Roxy, "Color barriers were smashed as black and white youths came from neighboring cities and counties to join the mod revival in unity, harmony and ska." Venice Spring Fling 3 is honored to host this year’s headliners, The Untouchables!
CHUCK DUKOWSKI SEXTET - Black Flag’s co-founder, bassist, and songwriter Chuck Dukowski is back with The Chuck Dukowski Sextet (actually a foursome), joined by his stepson Milo Gonzalez on guitar, wife Lora Norton on vocals, and Ashton Slater on drums. Dukowski's playing and songwriting were a critical force in the creation of punk rock and hardcore, and The Sextet's new version of Chuck’s classic Black Flag song “My War” (on a split 7”in with The Missingmen) shows that the man’s edge has not dulled. On their new album, Haunted, this combination of musicians brings a mélange of old school metal, hardcore and psychedelic rock peppered with a dash of classical, and is a generation- and genre-crossing whirlwind. Their live performances are powerful and explosive with guitarist and professional contortionist Milo Gonzalez backbending through his guitar solos. Lora Norton is a force to behold with her exotic persona, knee-length hair, and commanding voice! Beautiful but reckless, the Sextet create a space where prog-rock, psych and punk-laden folk innards enchant and pummel the listener into a kaleidoscopic sonic fury. The Chuck Dukowski Sextet are veterans of the annual Venice Beach Music Fest, and Venice Spring Fling 3 welcomes them back to the Ocean Stage for another twisted and mind-blowing set.
SCUNC - The concept of Scunc began in the summer of 2003, when guitarist/producer Michael Jost (Sugarbitch) and vocalist/poet Tovi Khali realized that Michael’s guitar stylings fit hand-in-glove with Tovi’s smoky and captivating lyrics and vocals. Their intense musical chemistry had to be shelved, however, when it became difficult to find the right mix of musicians to properly accompany Tovi's New Orleans approach and Michael Jost's dark European tones. Fast forward ten years: multi-platinum drummer/producer Andy Kravitz moves to Venice, and joins the band along with bassist Jeff Smith and Maddy D and his seductive flute, sax, keys, and spiritual percussion. Now the revival of Scunc has its heartbeat and a sound that only comes with seasoned wisdom, delivering a danceable and thought-provoking mix of funk, rock, soul, and spoken word. Venice Spring Fling 3 is proud to debut this exciting new lineup of the band, one that is sure to be a favorite by the time they’re through!
MEET ME AT THE PUB - Meet Me At The Pub formed in Venice in 1999, and Jeremy, Sully, and Jack soon built a rabid local fan base with the local surfers and skaters, throwing off-the-wall parties at their weekly shows at the Malibu Inn. But Meet Me At The Pub is not just your average party band – Jeremy’s satiric-but-real lyrics and energetic stage antics keep audiences entertained, amused, and dancing! In 2003 the band released their first major album, Monday Night, and with help from SurfRock Int., the band released their first Japan Import in 2006. They have toured the US, UK, and Japan, performing over 1500 shows in the past twelve years. The band released their third album, Tall Can Wednesday in July 2009, produced by Lewis Richards (Slightly Stoopid, Sublime). Pub embodies the true sound and spirit of the Southern California style--a mixture of reggae, ska, punk, and melodic rock (with the occasional odd waltz thrown in just for fun). Meet Me At The Pub has shared the stage with Toots & The Maytals, Eek-a-Mouse, Fishbone, The Untouchables, Horny Toad, and too many others to name. Any time Pub plays, it's a party, and everyone’s invited! Pub are multiple-year Venice Beach Music Fest veterans, and Venice Spring Fling is happy to welcome them back to the Ocean Stage for another pure Venice, rockin’ set overlooking the waves of the Pacific.
MARS AND THE MASSACRE - From the depths of space, Mars and the Massacre has come to f**k your eardrums! Mars & The Massacre are an L.A.- based rock trio originally hailing from Indianapolis, IN, composed of Peter Doherty (drums, bass, vocals), John Newell (guitar, vocals), and Ethan Walden (bass, drums). Yes, you read that correctly – they have been known to switch instruments multiple times in the set! They call themselves, “chaotically melodic Pixies punk, mixed with the sinister grunt of Queens of the Stone Age and the spacey weirdness of the Flaming Lips,” but there seems to be no limitation or appropriate genre to describe where this band can take their songs. Venice Spring Fling is excited to welcome Mars and the Massacre to blow it up at their first performance on the Ocean Stage.
Ya Harissa Bellydance Theater
Ya Harissa Bellydance Theater is a local Venice dance troupe. An annual favorite!
CORTY BYRON - At 27 years old, guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Corty Byron has been active as a musician for over a decade. After two solo projects, Endless North (2010) and Histrionic EP (2011), he gigged his way from Manhattan to Memphis, Austin to Vegas, and all points in between, opening for or performing with Gregg Allman, The Doobie Brothers, Bruce Hornsby, and The Gin Blossoms, among others. A Central Pennsylvania native, Corty relocated to Venice in 2011 and spent the following year performing all over the state, including at the Viper Room and the House of Blues. Playing both covers and originals, Corty has shifted away from blues-drenched, swampy vintage rock to song-driven, psychedelic indie pop. Work has already begun on an upcoming full-length album that will feature all new original material written in the past year while on the road and living in California. Corty’s set during Venice Spring Fling 2 was a highlight of the show; Venice Spring Fling 3 warmly welcomes Corty back for another set on the Ocean Stage!
THE MASON AFFAIR - Distinctive funk, rhythm, and soul band The Mason Affair has one singular purpose: Throw it down and groove it out! Founded in 2011 by Mike Mason, the band formed piece by piece through jam sessions with a unique blend of musicians from many influences and backgrounds. Cramming a full rhythm and horn section into a tiny studio built to hold half as many people forced the musicians to truly connect with each other and dive deep into their musical souls, crafting many original songs and throwing down their own gritty versions of classic jams by The Meters, Dr. John, Sly and the Family Stone, and Jimi Hendrix. Influenced by legendary raw funk powerhouses like Dyke and the Blazers and James Brown, The Mason Affair pay tribute to their influences by giving a modern touch to vintage funk and soul. Their debut album, Eyes on Fire (2012), features raw and funky cuts alongside others that forge a new direction in the genre of soul. Keeping a busy schedule of live shows and constantly evolving new material and ideas, The Mason Affair is stepping out into your world, ready to make you move, groove, and let it all hang out, expanding that funky West Coast feeling to a world hungry for soul. Venice Spring Fling 3 welcomes them to the Ocean Stage!
